Meta’s LLaMA (Large Language Model from Meta AI) is a state-of-the-art foundational large language model designed to help researchers advance their work in this subfield of AI. Smaller, more performant models such as LLaMA enable others in the research community who don’t have access to large amounts of infrastructure to study these models, further democratizing access in this important, fast-changing field.
The Alpaca model from Stanford is fine-tuned from a 7B LLaMA model on 52K instruction-following data generated by the techniques in the Self-Instruct paper. In a preliminary human evaluation, the authors found that the Alpaca 7B model behaves similarly to the OpenAI’s text-davinci-003 (i.e. OpenAI GPT3) model on the Self-Instruct instruction-following evaluation suite — all while being surprisingly small and easy/cheap to reproduce (<600$).
