From GPT-2 to GPT-4: The Evolution of Language Models and What to Expect!!!
GPT, which stands for “Generative Pre-trained Transformer,” is a type of language model developed by OpenAI. These models are pre-trained on vast amounts of text data, allowing them to generate human-like language and complete various language tasks, such as language translation, summarization, and question-answering. The GPT series is the latest and most advanced version of these language models, with GPT-4 released just yesterday. In this article, we will differentiate between GPT-2, GPT-3, and GPT-4 with a more emphasis on GPT-4.
GPT2 is the second iteration of the GPT series and was released by OpenAI in 2019. It was trained on a massive corpus of text data, comprising web pages, books, and articles, among others. The model has 1.5 billion parameters, which is about ten times the number of parameters in its predecessor, GPT1. GPT2’s architecture is based on the transformer model, which is a type of neural network that is particularly good at processing sequential data like natural language.
GPT2 can generate high-quality text that is grammatically correct and semantically coherent. It is capable of generating long-form text, including essays, articles, and stories, that is often indistinguishable from human-written text. However, GPT2 has some limitations, such as a lack of factual knowledge and a tendency to generate biased or offensive text.
GPT3 is the third iteration of the GPT series and was released by OpenAI in 2020. It is currently the most advanced language model in the GPT series, with 175 billion parameters, which is more than ten times the number of parameters in GPT2. GPT3 was trained on an even larger corpus of text data than GPT2, which included web pages, books, articles, and even programming code.
GPT3 can generate high-quality text that is not only grammatically correct and semantically coherent but also demonstrates a greater degree of creativity and originality. It can also generate a wider range of text types, including poetry, jokes, and product descriptions. It surpasses ChatGPT in its advanced reasoning capabilities. It outperforms ChatGPT by scoring in higher approximate percentiles among test-takers.
GPT-4 is 82% less likely to respond to requests for disallowed content and 40% more likely to produce factual responses than GPT-3.5 on OpenAI’s internal evaluations.
It can analyze and generate texts as long as 25000 words and capable of producing programs in any computer language.
GPT-4 still has many known limitations that OpenAI is working to address, such as social biases, hallucinations, and adversarial prompts.
